He's only 2 years old but Kade McGarvey has crawled away with a $3000 adventure prize package after winning a fundraising raffle to help three Te Kura o Te Koutu students travel to Mexico.
Hayley Hiha, the toddler's mother, said she bought the $10 ticket under her son's name at a
Kuirau Park flea market last month and was stoked when she found out the ticket had won first prize.
Miss Hiha said she rarely bought raffle tickets but couldn't say no when she was approached by the students and had forgotten about her purchase until she was called and told the good news.
"I was shocked. I can't remember the last time we won something and even though baby is too young to use most of the prizes, it's such an awesome prize package."
The local mother, who is eight months' pregnant with her next child, said she was happy the prizes did not have to be used all at once and looked forward to many family trips.
"It's such a cool prize and it's good to see students working hard to achieve a goal," she said.
Her ticket was one of 300 sold locally and in Wellington, Hamilton and Whakatane.
The winning package includes a family pass for four to the Zorb, Tamaki Maori Village, Mitai Maori Village, Hukafalls Jet, Kaitiaki Adventures White Water Rafting, Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park, Skyline Skyrides, Agrodome and Agroventures.
Second prize was a 3600m skydive with Nzone and third prize was a $200 meat pack.
The prizes were donated to Te Kura o Te Koutu students Taepounamu and Wharengaro Ruha and Te Mauri Kingi, who have been raising funds for a three-month school trip to Mexico next year.
The trio need $8000 each for their trip and will travel as part of a group of 21 senior students to further their Spanish-language studies, a compulsory subject at Te Kura o Te Koutu.
They will spend most of their time in Oaxaca, southern Mexico, where they will attend the Associated Language Institute (Instituto Cultural de Oaxaca), which is well known for it's intensive Spanish-language programme. Students will be able to gain credits that can be accredited to their tertiary studies and will board with Mexican families.
The three boys said their families had worked closely together to sell the tickets since September and had learned a lot from the experience.
Te Mauri's mother, Eva Tait, said they still had a long way to go before the boys raised enough funds but she was proud they had stepped out of their comfort zones.
"The highlight for the boys was approaching each business and asking them for help," she said.
"They had to come up with strategic plans and go through an interview process, which has helped build their self-confidence.
"We would all like to send a huge thanks to all the businesses who supported the boys. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have raised any money, so thank you."
