Ngahuia Muru, Amber Vercoe, Carla Reid and Alexa Madritsch put on a stellar performance at the Bay of Plenty Surf Life Saving Championships at Ohope during the weekend.

Competing for Whakatane Surf Club in the under-16 and under-19 events, the girls secured a win in the under-19 long course canoe, a second in the women's under-19 short course canoe and a third in the under-16 women's surf team.

Muru, Reid and Vercoe teamed up to place second in the under-16 ski relay and third in the under-16 board relay.

Nine clubs were competing at Ohope including Fitzroy from New Plymouth. Conditions on Saturday were difficult with a howling northwesterly wind, while on Sunday a small surf greeted competitors.

Whakatane's Barry Cutfield was very pleased with his placing in the masters ironman after only being home for three weeks from sailing around the Pacific Islands for seven months.
