In celebration of the Maori New Year Matariki, an exhibition is being held at the Rotorua Arts Village.
From tomorrow, Rotorua and national artists will start hanging their art pieces around the gallery for the exhibition opening on Monday. Organisers are hoping to attract many people to the exhibition.
It will showcase
art works from a range of artists with different mediums, but Arts Village manager Tania Short said this was just the beginning of an action-packed couple of weeks.
"We have so much happening down here. There will be a range of activities for all ages," she said.
The show will be supported with story telling by locals such as Bea Yates - affectionately known as Aunty Bea, Kingi Biddle and The Travelling Tuataras. It will then be followed by a guided walk of the Government Gardens and its sacred areas.
A major feature of the Matariki exhibition will be the symposium of ta moko artists which included Derek Savea who will be doing live ta moko for the public to view. He recently received a Creative NZ scholarship to learn his tradition art in his home-land of Samoa.
In association with Rotorua Museum, the Arts Village will be running ta moko work shops and teaching about the processes of design during the school holidays.
"It's going to be exciting for locals and we look forward to people taking part in what we have," Ms Short said.
The exhibition opens at 5pm on Monday at Rotorua Arts Village Experience. Entry is free.
