"It's music for music sake at this age and the songs they work on are pure and fresh which is really inspiring to see."
The musician has one-on-one sessions with the students to help them write songs, arrange music and guide them through the projects they are developing.
"Through years of being in the music industry, I've learnt how to overcome obstacles and will be able to pass that knowledge on to these students."
Christmas has been a part of the mentorship programme for about eight years and has been coming to Rotorua Lakes High School for five years.
"It is so rewarding to see young Kiwis willing to take risks and explore their ideas."
Year 10 music student Amy Nattrass said being mentored by Christmas was amazing.
"It has been an invaluable experience. I've started writing my own songs and he just gave me that little push I needed."
Rotorua Lakes High School band Venice sat down with Christmas and discussed adding a vocal point to their band which they didn't have before.
Rotorua Lakes High School head of music Chris Pasco said Christmas had done a lot of remedial work with the band.
"I find my pupils gain tremendously from the input of Jimmy and all the other mentors so kindly provided by the Music Commission."
