Update: Police make arrest after teen hit by vehicle

Police investigating an incident at Okere Falls near Rotorua in which a 17-year-old woman received critical injuries have arrested a 19-year-old man who is known to the victim.

He has been charged with driving with excess breath alcohol, careless driving causing injury and driving while suspended.

The man will appear
at Rotorua District Court on Monday.

The victim is undergoing surgery in Waikato Hospital and is still in a critical condition.

CIB members have interviewed a number of people, however would still like to speak to anyone who was travelling on SH33 between 3 am and 3.30 am near the Whangamarino School.

They would also like to speak to anyone who heard raised voices or a disturbance in and around this area.

If anyone has any information about this they should contact the Rotorua Police on 07 348 0099. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police have re-opened the road on State Highway 33 near Okere Falls, Rotorua after it was closed to investigate the incident about 3.30am today.

Police said the road was re-opened at 2.30pm today, to all traffic and the diversions had been removed.

Motorists are advised that there is a reduced speed limit on SH33, at Okere Falls.

However, motorists could still expect delays as ESR (Environmental Science and Research) continued to carry out a forensic scene examination in the area.
