The Bay of Plenty shook this morning after two earthquakes rattled the region.

Both earthquakes were shallow and happened within 40 minutes of one another.

The first earthquake struck at 2.23am at a depth of 2km. It was located 10km north east of Murupara.

The earthquake measured 3.4 on the richter scale and was deemed a "moderate" intensity by GeoNet, New Zealand's official source of geological hazard information.

The second earthquake was less intense, with measuring 2.8 on the richter scale.
