Last year it was the Baby Born doll.

This year the toy likely to top Christmas wish lists is the children's version of an iPad.

LeapFrog's LeapPad, aimed at children aged from 4 to 9, has a touch screen, more than 100 downloadable games, a built in camera and video recorder and motion sensors to play games by tilting the device.

It's one of 10 toys on the must-have list compiled by New Zealand's largest toy distributor Planet Fun.

Toyworld has also released its top 10 list and while there's no room for the LeapPad there's some nostalgia for parents as Lego and Sylvanian Families make an appearance.

Martin's Toyworld owner Derek Hintz said there were plenty of toys to choose from.

One of his favourites from the Toyworld top 10 was the Dino Train series. This is a range of interactive dinosaur toys aimed at children aged 3 and up.

"Dinosaurs have been popular for years," he said.

"Now we've got talking and interactive dinosaurs. They've made a big difference and we've sold heaps already."

If the Dino Train set is beyond your budget then there is also a range of plastic model dinosaurs for kids to use their imagination on.

The Eruera St store is packed with every toy imaginable. And while the Toyworld top 10 toys are bound to be big sellers this Christmas, Mr Hintz said it's not always the flashest and most expensive that were the most popular.

"Our biggest seller at the moment is the Jitter Ring," he said.

"There's been a huge craze this year. A lot of what we're selling are to parents re-living their childhood. They show their kids how to use them."

He said it was the store's biggest individual selling line and once they had sold the three left in store they wouldn't be able to restock until December as the supplier had also run out.

When it comes to buying Christmas toys there's no time like the present, Mr Hintz said.

"We've had a steady stream of people and a lot have already finished their Christmas shopping already. A lot buy early and put it away. It does help to spread the cost. If you're after one of the more popular lines get it now, or put it on layby because they always sell out at Christmas."

Martin's Toyworld also stocks the LeapPad, which is Planet Fun's number one toy for Christmas. It is on a shelf with lots of other toys that resemble their parents' laptops, tablets and smartphones.

Planet Fun chief executive Jeremy Kirk-Smith picked the LeapPad as number one based on global toy trends.

Mr Kirk-Smith said unlike other toy fads kids would not tire of the LeapPad.

"Kids are much more technology savvy from a young age, often imitating their parents' love of high-tech gadgets," he said.

"The LeapPad taps into the enthusiasm for adult smartphones and tablets and with hundreds of downloadable apps the learning and entertainment options for kids are endless."

Other hot picks on Kirk-Smith's list include the Razor Ultra Pro Lo Scooter for boys.

"Over the last 12 months scooters have become hugely popular, in particular trick riding. Razor is one of the most well-respected scooter brands in the US with their own team of professional riders. Their scooters are made from aircraft quality aluminium and are designed specifically for more aggressive riding.

"For girls, it's the Lalaloopsy dolls, which are a modern take on the rag doll. Similar in charm to the Cabbage Patch Kids, there is a large range of dolls whose unique personalities are appealing to girls."
