Rotorua Need a Nerd chief nerd Peter Moengaroa said people could download an app for pretty much everything.
Mr Moengaroa uses a Samsung Galaxy and said he used a variety of apps.
"The one I use the most is probably the flash light. It actually comes in handy quite a lot."
Another app he used regularly was Facebook.
"Everyone is on Facebook and the app is a great way to always have access to it.
"I also have a navigation app. There are a few free GPS apps which you can download and they have maps for both New Zealand and Australia."
He said he also had the New Zealand Herald app on his smartphone.
"A lot of banks also have apps which are ideal for people running a business."
Mr Moengaroa said people often downloaded a lot of apps they didn't use.
"People download things like games or those apps which are just funny and they get bored of them," he said.
"I don't think people use their phones to the full potential. It is really like having a little computer in your pocket."
Daily Post users commented on Facebook what their favourite smartphone apps were. Comments included: "Viber and voxer are cool", "FB and trade me and i LOVE my free music download one :)", "Whatsapp!" and "wheres my droid' awesome app!! wil track your phone dwn if its lost or stolen..fully works 2! =)".
Meanwhile, Geeks on Wheels Bay of Plenty regional manager Dan Bowden said apps were becoming big business for developers and companies using them for advertising.
"Businesses are using apps for marketing and data collection, while some apps have a practical use for the user, and others are purely for entertainment."
He said users were "scratching the surface" as far as apps potential for the future was concerned.
"The increase in the percentage of the public now using a smartphone with the capability to run apps has resulted in a seemingly exponential increase in the number of apps available, and the popularity of apps in general.
"I'm sure we're only just scratching the surface with the potential of what we can use these apps for."
