The club has just received a push in the right direction with a $25,000 grant from Transpower's CommunityCare Fund and it's working hard to find the rest of the estimated $200,000 to $300,000 required for skate park improvements.
The couple also received a boost in May when the Rotary Club of Taupo awarded them a Community Services Awards for the work they do to help young people. The award says "by wrapping structure and supervision around the activities, they [the Henares] have helped to train and teach young people in a range of life skills. They show how an idea, commitment and drive has a ripple effect to make a positive difference in other people's lives and, most importantly, they put smiles on faces."
Mr Henare is a farmer and Mrs Henare a policy advisor, and their children are aged between 2 and 9, but they still find time to sizzle sausages to raise money, or pile up to a dozen people in their campervan to travel to skate competitions.
Mrs Henare said the club helped provide skate resources, which could be expensive and it got kids out of Taupo.
"It's just exposure to more experiences, different places, different people.
"They love skating so the mode is something they're open to."
The club has some 30 members but there's a core group of about 12 aged from 8 to 23 with some very promising skaters in the bunch.
The B Extreme Skate Club has hosted three Taupo skate competitions.
The Henare family provide a whanau atmosphere and skaters are expected to take care of each other and the park.
"We were worried about the skate park," said Mrs Henare.
"There's a perception that the skate park was a drug-infested criminal place to be ... having been here for the last couple of years, that's definitely not our experience."
With full-time work and a big family, you could be excused for asking how they fit it all in.
"Our kids enjoy it," says Mr Henare.
"I get pleasure out of seeing people be happy, so I can't help myself but help with things like this," says Mrs Henare.
"It's all positive stuff. It's got so many positive spin-offs."
