Deeply concerned for the people of Christchurch, Kaitao Middle School has raised $1000 for victims of the earthquake.
With compassion still heavy on their minds, the pupils are now trying to find out how they can open their homes for Christchurch children affected by the quake.
Principal Rory O'Rourke said the pupils, who regularly fundraised for helping organisations in the community, decided to hold a mufti day for victims of the Christchurch earthquake.
Teachers and staff also joined in with the theme mello-yellow and matched the pupils' efforts, collecting a total of $1000 for Christchurch.
As part of the school's motto, Puawai, all pupils learn the principles of positive behaviour through respect, compassion, responsibility and honesty.
Last year the school won the Rotorua Business Excellence Award for social responsibility.
Mr O'Rourke said he was most impressed with the pupils putting up their hands to help raise money.
"It's great," he said.
"The head pupils have since come and said they are now wanting to billet kids from Christchurch. It's a great idea ... They are starting to think about these things and what they can do to help."
Head girl Holly Tuhakaraina said they felt as though they were helping family by raising money. "They are like our family ... We wanted to help them in some way," she said.
Head boy Ivan Van Niekerk said the students felt for the people of Christchurch so wanted to help them.
"We felt really bad for them. If we were in the same situation like them, we would want their help," he said.
