Rotorua families enjoyed the sunshine, face painting, sausage sizzle and had their say at the Hannah's Bay Fun Day.

The Hannah's Bay Reserve was crowded with happy families on a day all about celebrating one of Rotorua's recreational spaces.

There was a treasure hunt, face painting, weaving, sand play, waka ama and colouring in to keep the children entertained.

At the "pimp your pooch" stall, Rotorua Lakes Council was giving people the chance to win free microchipping and dog registrations.

Anna Lawson's 8-week-old puppy Ellie won a prize for her unicorn outfit.

"We got her microchipped and won free registration for the year," she said.

"It's been quite a fun day and I've really enjoyed myself."

Among the fun, there was also the opportunity for residents to take a few minutes out and have their say about the Hannah's Bay Reserve Management Plan.

Eastside Steering Group member Ralph Mosen said the group's booth was all about getting the community to have a say on what they would like to include and experience in the park.

People of all ages made suggestions.

"Today we're celebrating a change of management of the park from Rotorua Lakes Council to a management group made up of representatives from Ngāti Te Roro o te Rangi, Ngāti Uenukukopako and the wider community are all part of the group," Mosen said.

"Today is about finding out what the community wants before we make any decisions."

Rebecca Moore brought her two sons Callum, 7, and Cameron, 9, to enjoy the fun day.

The boys said it had been great and had taken part in the treasure hunt.

"I made a flax flower," Callum said.

Rebecca said they lived nearby and had come down for a fun day to enjoy the reserve.

"It's an amazing day and it's been so nice to have a fine weekend."

Cameron said what he would like to see at the reserve was an astroturf area so he could practice hockey.

Jo Keefe and her daughter Isis Russell, 6, had visited the face painting booth first.

"We come out to this park quite a lot and it's good to see they're looking forward to the future."
