Taupō police car’s risky blind-corner overtake on yellow lines caught on dashcam, officer faces review

A risky overtaking move by a police car rounding a blind corner near Taupō is being internally reviewed.

The overtaking manoeuvre, which occurred on yellow lines, was captured on dashcam footage by an oncoming truck driver.

The truck driver told the Herald that police “need to get held to the same standard” that he does on the road.

The incident occurred about 10 minutes out of Taupō about 4.30pm on Thursday.

Bay of Plenty district commander, superintendent Will Loughrin, said the incident involved an officer working to stop a speeding vehicle.

Loughrin said the officer had their lights activated when making the “overtaking manoeuvre”.

“However, we acknowledge there was limited visibility to do this completely safely, and that this would have been alarming for the driver of the oncoming vehicle," he said.

“Our people are human and do make mistakes, and we will be working with the officer involved to review what happened and support them.”

The speeding vehicle was stopped, and the driver was spoken to.
