Work to resurface Arawa St will start this weekend.

Rotorua Lakes Council said in a media statement the work will be carried out each night from 6pm to minimise disruption to businesses in the area and traffic management and diversions will be in place.

During the day the road will function as normal and no parking will be affected.

The work is expected to be completed by Thursday March 23 weather permitting.

The roundabouts at both ends of Arawa St and the first block of Amohia St between Arawa and Haupapa St's are scheduled to be resurfaced a week later.

Letters have been delivered to affected businesses in the area.

This work is part of council's asset renewal programme which is essential for the maintenance of Rotorua's roads and sees about 70kms of road resealed each year.

The average life of a road seal in Rotorua is about 12 years. Arawa St is a heavily loaded road so the life of its seal is lower than average.

It was last resurfaced in 2009.

Often the road's surface looks fine but the structure underneath may be damaged. In this case the seal is cracking and just like painting a house, it is important to protect the internal structure with a good quality seal.

Scheduling work to resurface roads before damage can occur to the structure underneath means that council can save costs by avoiding major work in replacing the entire road structure.

Another important safety reason for regular resurfacing work is to maintain skid resistance for vehicles when braking.

Did you know:

- Rotorua Lakes Council maintains more than 1000kms of roads and streets including 254kms of sealed urban roads, 609kms of rural sealed roads and 141kms of unsealed rural roads
- The cost of road reseals is about $2.6 million per year
- The total cost of road maintenance is about $10 million per year
- Resealing must be done when the weather is dry and warm. Most resurfacing work is done between November and April.

Questions or concerns about next week's resealing can be directed to the Transport Solutions team by calling 07 348 4199 or via email info@rotorualc.nz
