An examination of a fire scene at Rotorua Girls' High School is continuing, but as a result of the initial assessment police are treating the fire as suspicious and are seeking information from the community.

The fire was first reported to police at approximately 1.20am this morning by which time the fire was well established.

Two classrooms at the school on Old Taupo Rd were significantly damaged by the fire.

Police are aware of a number of comments being made on social media about the fire, but are urging the community not to be distracted or influenced by this commentary.

Detective Sergeant Richard Lang said: "The social media comments are being assessed as part of the investigation.

"However, it is not the only line of inquiry, and it is extremely important that people are not influenced by the comments to the point where they don't report information they have which might be relevant.
