Did you hear the one about the two kittens, a wild pig and the police officer?
Sounds like the beginning of a joke right?
Well it wasn't - Rotorua police spent part of their night rescuing two abandoned kittens and chasing a pig along Fairy Springs Rd.
Rotorua police were called to an alarm activation at Western Heights High School about 11.15pm but found nothing.
Rotorua police Sergeant Harold Watson said as they headed back to their car they noticed a box on the roadside. They found two kittens inside, and decided to take the box to the SPCA.
On the way back towards the Rotorua police station they noticed a mobile traffic hazard - a small black pig running along Fairy Springs Rd.
Mr Watson chased the pig before trying to catch it by feeding it a chicken sandwich.
The pig took off and ran through an industrial area in Ferguson Pl before police called a stock ranger to help. After about 40 minutes police and the ranger abandoned the chase. Mr Watson said the pig looked like a wild pig. The kittens would be taken to the Rotorua SPCA today.
