UPDATE:

Two people have been arrested following a police chase on State Highway 5, culminating on Waipa Bypass Rd.

A police media spokeswoman said police attempted to pull a car over around 8.15am on Waimangu Road, near Rotorua, but the driver did not stop.

She said spikes were laid in an attempt to stop the car on State Highway 5 near Tumunui Rd but the driver avoided them and continued on.

Following this police stopped traffic on State Highway 30 for a time to ensure the safety of other road users, she said.

A reporter at the scene said there were at least four police cars on Waipa Bypass Rd and a white car with it's door open.

A local woman driving into town said she was on State Highway 5 when the chase passed her.

"The driver of the car passed me on a corner and was veering all over the road.

"I had to pull over so he didn't crash into me... he was going up the Tumunui hill around 200km/h.
