Rotorua woman Dianne Fowler is desperate to find her brother Bruce, who has not been seen for more than a week.
"I can't think, I can't work, I can't sleep. He is my baby brother. I brought him up," Miss Fowler said.
Rotorua police hold grave fears for Mr Fowler, 42, who
was last seen on Wednesday night of last week by his sister.
"We had dinner. I just didn't see him after that," Miss Fowler said.
She initially thought the keen hunter had gone hunting or to see friends for a few days but reported him missing on Monday.
Detective Sergeant John Wilson of the Rotorua police said Mr Fowler's vehicle was seen on State Highway 38 last Thursday and was found yesterday in an area of the Kaingaroa Forest , near Minginui.
Rotorua police Search and Rescue staff and volunteers had spent the past two days searching for Mr Fowler and his car as far afield as Lake Waikaremoana with the help of ISCL Forest Security staff. A fixed wing aircraft was also used on Wednesday.
Six cars were involved in the search all day yesterday. "The area we have been searching is familiar to him," Mr Wilson said.
Mr Wilson said a member of the public had first seen the vehicle where it had been abandoned on July 17.
A search in the area the car was found would be carried out today. Bruce Fowler is described as Caucasian, 1.9m tall and of solid build. He has light brown hair, a ginger moustache and beard. He was living with his sister after moving back to Rotorua last November following 20 years overseas and had been having trouble finding work since his return.
Miss Fowler said her brother, who was single, hunted for deer and pigs and generally went alone.
"He loved the Minginui area, up the back there, up the Ureweras."
She had contacted people he knew out there and she and friends went to the Whirinaki Valley on Tuesday night to see if they could find his car.
Miss Fowler urged a woman called Jo, who worked at a Rotorua cafe, to get in touch with Rotorua police. She said her brother had gone to the cafe for a coffee on Saturdays for the past six weeks and would chat to a woman named Jo who worked there. Mr Wilson was to speak to Miss Fowler today before deciding what the police should do next.
