For 23 years Rolly Rolston was the backbone of Rotorua's RSA, recently retiring to spend more time with his family.

His services to the much-loved organisation have landed him the title of Rotorua Daily Post Person of the Month.

At the end of April, friends, family and former servicemen and women packed the RSA to farewell him.

Mr Rolston has been out of the job for less than a month but says he's been enjoying his time away from the work.

"I miss the people, but I certainly don't miss the pressures of the job.

"Actually, I've been really busy. I've been doing a lot of jobs around the house that I put off for so long.

"But I have been on the odd fishing trip."

Mr Rolston said he felt honoured to be named the person of the month for April.

"I didn't think I'd even be considered for it," he said.

The Rotorua Daily Post person of the year will be named at the end of 2013, with readers given the opportunity to vote for their favourite local in December.
