A Bay of Plenty man has been charged with murder in relation to the death of 30-year-old Jamin Roemaata Harrison in Omanawa last week.

The defendant, aged his 50s, faced charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, namely a shotgun, when he appeared in the Tauranga District Court today via audio-visual link from prison.

The murder charge relates to the death of Harrison on January 25 in Tauranga and the firearm charge is connected to the alleged murder, the court heard.

Police launched a homicide inquiry after a man Harrison was found dead at an Omanawa house on January 25.

The defendant's lawyer Maria Pecotic sought interim name suppression for her client and Judge David Cameron granted it before remanding the defendant to next appear in the High Court at Tauranga on February 24.
