Rotorua motels have been unknowingly targeted by consumer affairs television show Target - and they have come out on top.
TV3's Target visited three Rotorua motels - Kuirau Park Motor Lodge, Alpin Motel and Conference Centre and Aywon Motel - and rated them in categories such as service, value for money
and cleanliness, among others.
Kuirau Park Motor Lodge and Aywon Motel received an overall rating of eight out of 10, while Alpin Motel and Conference Centre received a rating of nine out of 10.
Kuirau Park Motor Lodge owner John Forbes is "very pleased" with the results, which he says was thanks to the work the staff do.
"It's not just us as managers and owners, we've got to give credit to our staff as well, it's all team work," Mr Forbes said.
"We give the staff instructions and it's nice to know they follow them through," he said.
Mr Forbes says people from the show stayed at the motel on September 1 and they didn't know they had been selected until about three weeks later when they received a letter telling them of their rating.
Mr Forbes says the positive rating is "really good for Rotorua, because it shows the rest of the country and the rest of the world" that Rotorua motels are of a high standard.
Although his motel didn't receive a 10 out of 10 rating, Mr Forbes says he doesn't think Target gave anyone 10 out of 10 and thinks they lost points for having a broken sofa that was due to get repaired.
The three motels tested are part of the Rotorua Association of Motels (RAM) Group, which has 43 members.
Motels in the group have to maintain a high standard, hesays.
RAM chairman Glenn Stafford agrees that to be part of the group, motels have to follow a set of codes and maintain a certain standard. He says all three motels "have done well".
Target producer Simon Roy says the Rotorua motels were given a better rating than those in Tauranga rated earlier in the year by the TV3 show, which aired on Tuesday night.
The host of the consumer affairs show, Jeanette Thomas, said during screening: "Well done Rotorua, we'll come and stay again".
Mr Roy says the show looked at service, proximity to traffic and cleanliness.
- A repeat of Tuesday night's Target will feature on TV3 at 4.30pm on Saturday.
