A man had to be airlifted to hospital after being crushed by cows.

The 47-year-old was herding the cows for milking on an Opotiki farm on Tuesday when the incident happened.

He  was opening a gate when several cows bolted to get out, crushing him against a fence.

The TrustPower
TECT Rescue Helicopter took the man to Whakatane Hospital in a moderate condition.
