Lynmore Primary School pupils have raised hundreds of dollars for the Salvation Army's Rotorua foodbank.
The school raised $770 and donated about 100 cans of food through mufti days and food collections.
They were presented to Major Rex Rees by the students last Thursday and Lynmore Primary School council's chairwoman, Millie Borren, 10, said there were still more donations to come.
"Everyone has been really generous. Some kids even brought $10 notes."
She is already planning ahead to the next fundraiser, a book character dress-up day which is scheduled for next month.
Teacher Wendy Watson said the junior classes made the decision to fundraise for the Salvation Army because they wanted to "help people".
"They have always been very interested in the SPCA but they wanted to do something different this year."
The pupils looked at the distribution of government funding to local charities and decided who they could help the most.
Miss Watson said it had been a great learning curve for the children.
"They can bring 50 cents or a can, but the students often do both."
Meanwhile, the Salvation Army has received food and money in the past week since The Daily Post revealed the foodbank's cupboards were bare. Social worker Hillary Thole said the donations were much appreciated but the foodbank still needed more because it had no reserves.
"It can look very healthy one day but by the end of the week it could be all gone."
PLEASE HELP If you have a spare can of food or other food items or want to donate money, you can drop it off at the Salvation Army's Family and Community Services at Community House, 1115 Haupapa St, Rotorua.
