The Easter school holidays have started with wet and wild weather but there is still plenty happening in Rotorua to keep the children entertained.

The Arts Village activities and events co-ordinator Sophie Perry said there were still quite a few slots for activities in its ages 8 to 12 school holiday programme.

These activities are Mosaic Creations with Marilyn Stevenson on Tuesday April 18, Papercraft Creations: Cut Cover and Create with Rhonda Coleman on Wednesday April 26, and Window Stickers with Lani Eyles on Thursday April 27.

There are also still slots available in the age 5 to 7 programme for an art day full of fun to encourage young minds with Keita Hauiti.

Ms Perry said all children had to bring was lunch and a smile.

The sessions cost $25 per day. To book visit The Arts Village at 1240 Hinemaru St or www.artsvillage.org.nz.

Rotorua District Library's children and teen librarian TA Rangi said The Great Big, Bad Bug Challenge was open to all 5 and up, was free and was taking place on Monday, April 24.

It would involve five challenges, including guessing the life-cycle of certain bugs and hunting for bug cards around the library.

Each participant is given a passport in which they receive a stamp for completing each challenge. Once five stamps are collected each passport goes into the draw to win a magnifying glass.

At Motion Entertainment, on Te Ngae Rd, Chipmunks Playland and Cafe owner operator Rachel Ellwood said she was expecting a busy time over the break.

A holiday programme is being offered from Monday for 5 to 11-year-olds, from 8.30am to 6pm. There is a cost.

Activities include putt-putt golf, a trip to the Redwoods if the weather allows and different arts and crafts.

Mrs Ellwood said Chipmunks would be its open normal hours of 9.30am to 5.30pm, and would offer a drop-off service where parents could leave their children while going off to explore Motion Entertainment or do some errands.

The Rotorua Museum is holding arts and crafts on weekdays during the school holidays, apart from Easter Monday.

They will be held in the Te Runanga Tea Rooms from 10am to 3pm. They are free and you do not need to book.

Rotorua Museum event co-ordinator Kathy Nicholls said crafts would include making Easter bunny masks, Easter chick masks and there would be colouring activities, with more detailed Easter cards for adults to colour in.

On Anzac Day there will be wreaths and poppies to make.

The remembrance boards which are usually in the museum will be at the Te Runanga Tea Rooms so people can write messages and put a poppy on the board.

The Great Rotorua Easter Egg Hunt, run by the Rotorua Lakes Council, runs for the entire school holiday period and is going ahead rain or shine.

Ms Nicholls said entry forms would be available from Rotorua iSite, the Rotorua Museum or the Te Runanga Tearooms from Tuesday.

For animal-loving youngsters Animates is hosting activities on Thursday April 20 and Thursday April 27 from 11am to 12pm.

Children can learn everything they need to know about rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice.

Rotorua's Yvonne Vincent said these school holidays she had family coming up from Wellington and, depending on the weather, they would usually go to the Redwoods, Lake Okareka and Rainbow Springs.

Mrs Vincent said she would "dare say" they would be watching movies at some time, getting the Lego out, and using Brainbox where you could make electronic circuits.

She said her two boys Patrick Vincent, 13, and Andrew Vincent, 11, read a lot and the Rotorua Library was fantastic.

Mrs Vincent said they usually went to playgrounds around town, and she wanted to get out in the garden to do some pruning and the boys would clean up after her.

She said they also did things such as have pyjama days, had dinner backwards with dessert first, ate lots of chocolate for Easter and would have a pot luck lunch with friends.
