Conservation staff are urging beachgoers to be aware of feathered friends sharing the sand.

Department of Conservation (DOC) biodiversity assets ranger Mithuna Sothieson said native shorebirds such as the New Zealand dotterel and variable oystercatcher are calling the Eastern Bay home this breeding season.

She said DOC staff and volunteers had started trapping for pests at important nesting sites.

"The aim of the game is to enhance breeding success by increasing chick survival as well as protecting important habitat. But we cannot do this alone," she said.

"Avoid areas where birds appear distressed, as this is often a good indication that eggs or chicks are nearby."

She said damage to well camouflaged nests could be minimised if beach users respect temporary fences and signs, keep their dogs on leads and vehicles off beaches and walk below the high-tide mark.

For further information on protecting native shorebirds, contact DOC in Opotiki on (07) 315 1001 or visit www.doc.govt.nz.
