"Marmageddon" has hit Rotorua, with the city's four major supermarkets officially out of Marmite.

Supermarket shelves around the country are being stripped bare of the popular spread, after warnings it was in short supply. For many in Rotorua the warning may have come too late.

New World owner/operator Brendan Good said his supermarket had been out of Marmite for at least a week.

He said they had been selling more Bovril and Vegemite than normal although, as a Marmite man, he would be making do with peanut butter when his own supply ran out.

At Pak'n Save the Marmite shelf has also been empty for about a week. Owner Neil Foster said he was trying to source more but with production stopped the chances were pretty slim and Vegemite stocks were being increased.

Countdown - both at Central Mall and Fenton St - was also out of stock.

Meanwhile, opportunists looking to capitalise on the shortage have already put jars of the yeast spread on Trade Me.

A Taupo seller has offered an unopened 500g jar of Marmite for a "buy now" price of $100, prompting mixed reaction from site visitors. Some abused the seller for being a "scalper" and "pathetic" but others entered into the spirit, asking the seller to throw in a loaf of bread, to which the seller agreed. Even so, the bidding yesterday sat at just $10.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there was little interest in a Rotorua seller's "barely used" 125g jar with a best before date of May 2011. With a start price of $20, it included the dubious selling point that it had "never been finger dipped".

Marmite production was halted because of earthquake damage at Sanitarium's Christchurch plant - the only plant where it is made - and it's not expected back on shelves until mid-July.

Twitter users have suggested it was a publicity stunt after pre-prepared "Marmite is out of stock" signs were spotted in anticipation of the shortage, but Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heerden said this was not true.

"We don't engage in that type of marketing ... there's absolutely no truth to it whatsoever."

Sanitarium had told consumers not to "freak out" as it worked to relocate its manufacturing facilities to a safer area.
