Hymns striking seasonal chord

If Christmas carols strike a chord, then head along to the final Hymn-Along of the year to join others in joyful singing.

This Sunday the Hymn-Along will be at the Salvation Army Church, on the corner of Old Taupo Rd and Hillcrest Ave, from 2.30pm.

Organiser Melvyn Bowen expects more people to come along as it is a Christmas special featuring the Salvation Army brass band.

The Hymn-Along has been appearing at different centres of worship once a month and is an opportunity for people of different denominations to join together and sing "God-honouring songs".

"We get all age groups and not just church people," Mr Bowen said.

"It's not a churchy thing, it's different denominations coming together. We're not super-religious but we do like to be reverent in that which we sing is time-honoured and steeped in scripture."

They will be accompanied by the brass band, which Mr Bowen said added to the event. "When people sing the carols with us they get a real awareness of what Christmas is really about."
