The Hello Sunday Morning campaign, which aims to change Kiwis' drinking habits, has reached Rotorua.

The challenge invites people to give up alcohol for three months and to reap the benefits of having a clear head on Sunday mornings. It's hoped that the alcohol-free stint will help change people's drinking habits.

Professional stunt woman and campaign promoter Jazz Rowland met with keen Rotorua Hello Sunday Morningers (HSMers) yesterday, as part of the local launch, to discuss the pros and cons of the challenge.

"When I did my three months it was a huge eye-opener," she said. "It was a really hard thing to learn that I didn't actually require something like getting drunk to be myself or to be confident and have fun.

"The [Kiwi] culture has made getting drunk okay. It is okay to be stumbling about your favourite pub at 3am just to have fun - which it shouldn't be.

"We are focused on making culture change."

She said people could sign up for the challenge online through Twitter, Facebook or the website www.hellosundaymorning.com.au to get encouragement from others taking on a three-month, one-month, or even one-week challenge and to write about it on the web.

"We are looking to organise a joint activity after a month or so that HSMers can come and enjoy in Rotorua to show you don't need to get drunk to have fun," Ms Rowland said.

She suggested HSMers might wish to attempt a weight loss or fitness challenge at the same time to maximise the benefits of being alcohol-free.

Rotorua police area tactical response manager, Inspector Ed Van Den Broek, said the campaign provided good role modelling.

"We deal with young people at the age of 12, 13 or 14 intoxicated in town so it would be good if this helps curb alcohol consumption," he said.

According to research, 90 per cent of New Zealanders who had completed an HSM challenge said their attitude towards alcohol had changed.

Eighty per cent said they now found it easier to say no to alcohol while 66 per cent revealed their confidence levels had improved.
