Rotorua's Government Gardens was a hive of activity tonight as 10 local buskers gave it their all for a prized spot performing at the Glo Party on New Year's Eve.

The finalists of the Glo Spot Buskers Competition were stationed around the gardens today performing as the public walked around dropping tokens into the hats of those they liked the most.

Each busker also had a 15-minute slot to perform at the main stage outside the Blue Baths to make the most of the crowds.

Second place went to dancers Breakthrew Academy who won $1000 and judges' choice (judged by Monty Morrison and Paul Hickey) winning $500 was Nate Simmons.

All three place getters will perform Thursday night at the Rotorua Lakefront for the city's New Year's Eve party.

Rotorua woman Josephine Ngare said she was enjoying the atmosphere and talent on offer.

"It's really cool and great that it's free, I was able to bring the kids down and my daughter took off with the tokens to pick the buskers she liked the most.

"It's an awesome event for Rotorua to have. I think they should do it again next year because it's great exposure for the singers."

The youngest singer in the group of finalists was 8-year-old Nikau Grace Chater.

Her mum Rachel Chater said the competition had been a neat experience for Nikau.

"It was something she saw on Facebook and wanted to do. I am blown away with how far
she has come. It has been an incredible experience for her and I am so proud.

"Nikau was singing before she was talking, she doesn't have your average 8-year-old's voice and she wants to do something with it."

Nikau said her competitors were talented and the competition had been interesting.

"It has been very competitive but most of all I would say I've had a lot of fun."

Jun Lee had people tapping their feet to his remix of Johnny B.

Goode and wowed the crowd with his slick guitar playing, while Stella Maris generated a large crowd as she demonstrated her live vocal looping talent.
