An 8-year-old Kawerau girl who fell 4m from a balcony and landed on her face remains in a stable condition in Middlemore Hospital's intensive care unit.
The girl fell from a balcony in Ohope and landed on her face, causing fractures to her face and jaw.
She had been camping with her mother and father at the Maungaronga Marae, next to the Ohope Christian Camp on Pohutukawa Ave.
A local man, who didn't want to be named, said the girl had been playing with a ball with some other children and had leaned too far over a hand rail.
She was taken to the Whakatane Hospital after her fall, and at 2am on Tuesday was flown by the Westpac Air Ambulance to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland for specialist trauma care. She was accompanied on the flight by her father and a Waikato-based intensive care unit transport team.
