Frighteners out in force

Zombies, ghouls, ghosts and creepy clowns were out in force at Rotorua's museum on the weekend, leaving people running through the corridors in fear.

About 160 people faced their fears and dared to take a walk - or run in some cases - through Nightmare at the Museum on Friday and Saturday nights.

For the second year running the Rotorua Museum held the event, in conjunction with Rotorua's popular Zombie Walk, both fundraisers for Brain Injury Rotorua.

Event organiser Layla Robinson said this year's event featured an extended horror walk through the corridors and basements of the museum.

Ms Robinson said about 35 people pulled out of the walk before getting to the end of the 10-minute experience.

"They couldn't carry on, they were just so scared, but we class that as a success - it is advertised as a horror walk, not a Disney walk," she said.

"We had a good mix of people, I think about 160 people had a go."

She said 32 volunteer actors got dressed up and provided plenty of scares.

"It's a real adrenaline rush and we can't wait for the next group to come through and see if we can't freak them out more than the last group."

She said the walk usually took about 10 minutes, a lot less if you ran.

Comments on the Nightmare at the Museum Facebook page reveal how people felt about their scary experience.

"Scariest thing I've ever been to so far. And I'm still scared. I must say it was so much fun," one said.

Another said: "Itz soo scary but itz really, really fun and spooky and itz worth the money."

One frightened soul commented: "Some of the scariest stuff ever. Really did push me to the limits. I'm alright with serial killers but dead people is crossing the line for me. Had to leave early on the walk I was so scared."

Nightmare at the Museum is on again on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $10 per person or $40 for a group of five.

You have to book early because spaces are limited. The event runs from 7pm to 9pm and is restricted to people 13 or older.
