Rotorua is gearing up for a busy month, with significant state highway upgrades scheduled alongside one of the city’s biggest annual events, Crankworx Rotorua.

Motorists are being urged to plan ahead as key transport routes undergo essential maintenance and traffic volumes increase around popular visitor hubs.

SH36/Ngongotahā Rd rebuild

A major six-week rebuild of State Highway 36/Ngongotahā Rd began today, targeting the section between Hood and Taui Rds.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) said years of patching have reached their limit, prompting the roading agency to undertake a full asphalt reconstruction to prevent potential failures over winter.

To complete the work efficiently, the southbound (Rotorua-bound) lane of SH36 will be closed from 9am on Mondays until 2.30pm on Fridays, reopening for weekends, NZTA said in its latest update.

During closures, southbound traffic will be detoured via Wikaraka Rd and Taui Rd. Access to side roads –including Taui, Hall and Hood – will be restricted to left-in/left-out only, though residents and businesses will retain access under the guidance of traffic crews.

Northbound traffic can continue using SH36 under temporary speed limits and lane shifts. Motorists should expect delays, and school traffic is encouraged to use the SH36/SH5 roundabout to turn around.

NZTA said the one-way closure enables crews to complete the rebuild faster while improving safety for workers and road users.

SH30A Amohau St

Essential repairs to SH30A Amohau St are progressing through a series of overnight closures.

The westbound lanes between Te Ngae Rd and the Pak’nSave right-turn bay are closed from 8pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday.

The road reopens during the day, though drivers will encounter uneven surfaces, temporary speed limits and ramped transitions.

NZTA said the project was expected to wrap up by mid-April.

SH5 Waiotapu Rd rebuild nearing completion

Further south, the road rebuild near Waiotapu Loop Rd on SH5 is operating 24 hours a day, Monday to Friday, with work due to finish by late March.

Stop/go traffic management and reduced speeds remain in place.

Crankworx Rotorua returns this week

Adding to the city’s activity, mountain-biking event Crankworx Rotorua returns from Wednesday to Sunday this week, centred near the Skyline Gondolas on SH5.

The internationally renowned mountain biking festival is expected to draw large crowds, and motorists should expect increased traffic in the area.
