Some people think a five-legged calf is a bit of a freak and others think it is just adorable.
The calf, which has a fifth leg growing out of its neck, has become pretty popular on Trade Me since being listed by Reporoa dairy farm manager Jonathan King last week.
Bids have
reached $150 for the calf, which would have fetched only $15 if put on the bobby truck shortly after birth like other unwanted calves.
Many have stated the calf - dubbed "Legs" by Mr King - was lucky to be alive. Others say it should have been shot at birth.
However, Mr King, who thinks the "friendly" animal would make a perfect calf club pet or family pet, is selling it for Christmas beer money.
He's not at all perturbed by some of the negative comments left on Trade Me. He's received one text message from a woman who thought Legs was "cute as".
"She's captured people's hearts ... It's funny as," he said.
"There have been a few mixed opinions, it's all good. I knew it would get a few looks but not to this extent."
This farmer hopes the calf goes to a good home.
"It would be nice to think she will have a couple of years before ending up in the freezer." Mr King said.
He's looking forward to buying a few beers when the auction closes next Thursday, December 30, with 10 people presently fighting it out to buy the calf.
"Well, you do have to have a cold one for the Christmas season," Mr King said.
ONLINE AUCTION COMMENTS
- Awww gorgeous. I'd totally buy it if I had the room.
- This is awesome ... not surprised to see something like this come out of Rotorua ha ha.
- Are you sure it's not just wearing a hoof scarf? Those things are going to be big this winter.
- What the hell mate? Why would u sell something like that, that's stupid and sad.
- I don't know who is more sick you or the people that are bidding.
- It should have been shot at birth, sad one.
- Poor calf, poor calf.
- Hey for you ones out there that think it is sick! Pull your heads in and think about. It's one that may be given a chance instead of [rubbish] comments, why not buy it?
- LOL at the outraged townies. They just can't handle it, aye. If they even own gumboots I bet they are sparkling clean! Beautiful calf and she is lucky to have not got a bullet. Had a mate who had a two-headed calf, stillborn obviously but really freaky. Good luck with the auction and hope she gets a great home.
- God there are some negative people out there. This little calf is gonna have a wonderful life thanks to this guy! A nice family will treasure her - I know I would give her a fantastic life if I had some land.
- I wonder what all these negative people would do if they had a handicapped child? They obviously don't have enough work.
