Work continues to restore power to homes in Rotorua after a car brought down a power pole in the early hours of this morning.

Power was initially cut to about 450 customers in Springfield and Tihiotonga when a car crashed into a pole on Springfield Rd about 2.25am.

Unison relationship manager Danny Gough said power had been restored to all but around 30 customers as of midday with the use of generators.

"Unfortunately this is a major one, the power pole which was hit carried a big chunk of the network.

"Repairs will continue this afternoon and we hope to have power restored to everyone by this evening."

In July, a car crashed into the power pole at the same location, on the corner of Regent St and Springfield Rd, cutting power to 2000 customers.

Gough said it was extremely frustrating.

"It's very costly and a lot of work [to repair], I need to acknowledge the crews working on the repairs and also the customers."

A police media spokesman said the crash was reported at 2.25am.

No one was in the vehicle when police arrived and inquiries are being made to find the driver, he said.
