Getting new wheelie bins delivered was "like Christmas" for one Rotorua woman.

The first bins for kerbside rubbish collection and recycling were delivered to some Rotorua streets today.

Each house is getting two bins - one for recyclables and the other for general rubbish, as well as a crate for glass.

Neighbours on one Pukehangi St were excited to be among the first to receive their bins.

Erin Jarmey said she and her family moved to Rotorua from Auckland a year ago, where they had had recycling bins.

She said when they moved here everything had gone into the rubbish bags until they realised there was a recycling centre in town.

It would be good to not have to travel to the centre, she said.

She said her boys had been excited about the bins because they could not wait to wheel it up the driveway - which she said would be a good job for them.

"I'm sure they'll be the ones that pull it out to the road and back again."

Chantelle Ward said it was exciting and it would be handy to have the recycling collected from the kerbside.

She said was "all a time thing" and taking it to the recycling centre would be one less thing to do.

Jo de Loryn said she had "absolutely" been looking forward to the kerbside collection and that they had always had a wheelie bin but paid for it.

"I was excited. It was like Christmas."

An information booklet which includes collection days and other details is being delivered with the bins.

About 25,000 sets of bins and crates are scheduled to be delivered to properties in the city over the coming weeks, with the new system effective from October 31. Until then, residents should continue to put their rubbish out in the brown paper bags.
