She entered the competition because it was a great opportunity and it was good to have on a CV. Ms Trubshaw enjoyed meeting the other contestants and seeing the different styles.
"It was so amazing and a really good learning experience."
Ms Trubshaw's next competition is the national competition in July, also in Christchurch, and she said the winner of that competition goes to the 2013 WorldSkills International Floristry Competition in Germany.
Ms Trubshaw has been studying floristry for the past 18 months. She said it was a family concern. Ms Trubshaw's grandmother, Penny Trubshaw, teaches the New Zealand Horticulture Industry Training Organisation's florist course.
Rosie Burghart, of Nelson, was named Senior Young Florist Apprentice of the Year and the two were among 14 of New Zealand's best young florists who competed for the titles in Christchurch.
Each of the florists made 18 floral designs during the event, demonstrating their skills in creativity and design to the thousands of visitors.
Categories included making up a bridal bouquet, decorating a bicycle and making an Ellerslie fascinator head piece.
Competition convener Joy Knight said the it was important to promote world class standards of excellence and skills within the industry.
"It is also an opportunity for young florists to push their boundaries of design," she said.
