Rotorua's Emily Robinson may only be 17 but she has already been named the best checkout operator in the Bay of Plenty.
The New World Westend checkout operator was one of more than 120 operators from local New World, Pak'n Save, Four Square and Gilmours who battled it out for the
Bay of Plenty Checker of the Year title on Tuesday evening at the Rotorua Events Centre.
And she won.
Competitors had to scan more than 30 items under a strict time limit while maintaining a high level of customer service in front of an audience of judges and supporters.
They were also assessed on presentation, service, speed and the ability to correctly count back change.
Emily has been working at Westend New World as a part-time checkout operator for two years between her studies and said she didn't expect to win.
"Everyone was very good and I was quite nervous at first.
"When my name was announced I was speechless. It was such a good feeling," she said.
"This was the first checkout competition I have entered and didn't know there were checkout competitions until last year, I'm stoked," she said.
Emily received a Visa Prezzy Card with $300 credit and a Checker of the Year pen for her efforts. She will compete in the Foodstuffs Auckland's Checker of the Year grand finals on November 13 alongside runner-up Kendyll Reeve who works at Tauranga's New World Brookfield.
New World Westend checkout operators Serena Olsen, Maia Wharekura, Carol Olsen and Shannon Dunn also won the title of overall winning team and checkout manager Clive Wood said he was extremely proud of all the workers.
"Emily is a lovely girl and her personality complements her job well and the competition has proven that there is a huge amount of potential in the department," he said.
"Everyone did so well and it was a massive achievement for the company," he said.
Foodstuffs (Auckland) Limited training and development business support manager Donna Marra said the annual competition recognised the importance of checkout operators.
"Checkout operators are the friendly and efficient face of our stores and provide a huge part in keeping our customers happy and returning each week to enjoy their shopping experience," she said.
