A car has crashed into a fence opposite Western Heights High School.

A police spokeswoman said police were at the intersection of Old Quarry Rd and Kea St where a woman had crashed after trying to avoid a police checkpoint about 1pm.

She said the woman had minor injuries and resisted arrest, but had since been taken into custody.

A Rotorua Daily Post photographer said an SUV had gone halfway through a fence and there were five patrol cars and one other police vehicle at the scene.

He said a woman was sitting on the ground, handcuffed, speaking to police.
