The quick thinking of a driver has helped a 5-year-old boy escape with only superficial injuries after he ran on to a Rotorua road.
The incident happened about 8.25am yesterday on Clayton Rd near the Susan St intersection.
Rotorua police road police Senior Constable Grant Keys said the oncoming driverhad spotted the boy on the side of the road and acted defensively.
"The approaching vehicle has seen the boy at the front of a stationary vehicle. They've become aware and braked in anticipation. They've just come to a stop when the boy ran into the side," Mr Keys said.
"The boy has fallen backwards and got superficial injuries to his head." Mr Keys said the boy was "very keen" to get to school.
"The other driver was driving defensively, they saw something strange and braked. By her action he's run into the side rather than into the front and been run over."
