I was reminded the other day that we have roughly five months until Christmas.
Which means the excuse for a few . . . okay, seven, extra kilos of non-muscle weight sitting around what I call the "festively plump" region is now no longer so much festive plumpness as more of a "nearly 60 per cent of the year being lazy rotundness".
It may shock some, including my wife who has to see the nightly parade from the bathroom to the bedroom, but I was once in great shape. And not as in the wonderful egg shape I am transforming into, but the shape of a man who was reasonably into fitness.
Fitness in the traditional sense, not the internet meme sense of "Yeah, I'm into fitness - fitness whole pizza in my gob".

So I began a search for motivation. Literally, I searched motivation on the internet.
I was left with a page full of images of mountains and placid lakes and sayings like "T.E.A.M Together everyone achieves more" and "If you're waiting for the right time it's now".
And my favourite: "I can, but I won't". (Although I'm reasonably sure that last one was some sort of Google malfunction.) Not exactly the stuff of which fitness dreams are made.
I bought some resistance bands to start working out at home. Which are working really well because so far I have done a great job of resisting opening the drawer into which the sealed packet was placed!
You just need to get back on the wagon, suggested an old training friend. What a great idea, I thought, as I hopped on to the Radio Flyer and got the kids to tow me to the dairy for a two for $5 pie deal. That'll give me time to think about how to attack this fitness journey.
But it's when you're actually accountable to others and someone is watching that true motivation comes along. People never Facebook with the boss looking over their shoulder at work, and it's the same with exercise and eating a bit better.
So with that in mind, when Sarah, my Hits 89.5 co-host, asked me if I wanted to jump into an eight-week lifestyle challenge, I said, "I will if you do, then others might too."
So keep an eye on The Hits' Facebook page and jump on board soon, we may even like it!
