There was no way Whangarei's Jovial Judge Tavern was going to celebrate a week day St Patrick's Day over the nearest weekend to attract more daytime patrons.
Duty manager Piki Rennie says there's only one day it should be celebrated, and that's the 17th, no matter what the day of the week, and begorrah, so it was at the Jovial Judge yesterday.
Pictured right is fiddle player Terry Toohill of the popular Tree Fellas band of Ruakaka, which belted out Celtic music at the tavern from 11am to 5pm.
The steady stream of patrons included lunchtime groups from nearby offices who departed cheerfully (very cheerfully) saying they would be back after work.
Mr Rennie, who books the Tree Fellas every year, went on the internet for information on Irish food for cook Chandra Haley, coming up with a full traditional cooked breakfast and Irish stew and potatoes for lunch, and then added a touch of his own - green boiled eggs.JOHN STONE
