A public hearing on plans to demolish an old boat shed will be held at the Opua Cruising Club tomorrow.
The meeting will discuss plans to demolish the shed at the end of Deeming Rd on Okiato Point, 8km from Russell township, and to rebuild the boat shed as a boat house and add other extensions to the property.
The original boat shed was believed to have been built in the 1920s and has been notified as having "some" historical value. But the building structure had deteriorated too much to be worth saving. The land itself has some cultural value to local tangata whenua and coastal preservation groups.
Six individuals and four groups will make submissions to the hearing before Commissioner Bill Smith of Whangaparaoa. Two of those have asked for consent to be granted and the remaining eight, including Kororareka Marae, the New Zealand Fire Service, Northland District Health Board and the Opua Coastal Preservation Society, oppose the granting of consent to build a new boat house and add other structures to the land.
The hearing begins at 9.30am.
