A Northland marae has shut it doors while whanau discuss ways of fundraising for its makeover.

Kaikohe's Te Kotahitanga Marae was built in the 1880s on a site with a history dating back to the 1730s. Trustee Joe Cochrane said the condition of the marae had been the subject of discussion for the past 25 years.

"We took the decision to close it to get everyone on board," Mr Cochrane said.

"We thought that was a better option than waiting for the various authorities to close it."

Mr Cochrane said the decision was supported by authorities, including Health and Safety, the Fire Service and the Far North District Council.

The trustees and marae community were still discussing plans with options ranging from basic to substantial. The rebuild would, however, include a new kitchen and ablution block.

Mr Cochrane said it was decided that the new complex would be environmentally-friendly by incorporating things like solar power and eco-toilets.

Now, the marae is discussing how to raise funds for the project, Mr Cochrane said it was too soon to say how much money will be needed.

The existing whare will be moved closer to State Highway 12, and will be preserved, with its successor to be built on its current site.
