Is a fossil free NZ possible?

An organisation urging New Zealand to create action against climate change is bringing its campaign to Whangarei.

Generation Zero is presenting its "What's the Hold Up?" speaking tour tonight.

The message for the tour is that a fossil-fuel free New Zealand is achievable.

Co-founder Louis Chambers says this is the group's 11th tour date and they are looking forward to seeing a good turnout in Whangarei.

"You'll hear from young people, and older people, including Rick Boven and local councillor Aaron Edwards, giving an optimistic and fresh approach to climate change," Mr Chambers said.

Generation Zero was founded in 2011 by a group of young people based at Otago and Victoria universities.

It has since spread to open up hubs in Hamilton and Hawke's Bay and Mr Chambers hopes Whangarei will follow suit.

Edwards believes Whangarei is in a good position to start its own Generation Zero hub.

"I do think there is already a number of committed young people working for the environment now," he said.

"It would be great if they came together and worked more closely on the issue."

Mr Edwards said his decision to become involved in local body politics was to push for climate-friendly transport such as cycling.

"There is a huge precedent for movements like this to start at a local body level.

"The nuclear-free movement started in local councils and the GE movement has similar issues."

Mr Boven, currently a strategist for government, commercial and non-for-profit organisations, holds a PHD in Environment Management from the University of Auckland and has previously been a director of think tank The New Zealand Institute.

The event kicks off at 7pm at the Whangarei Girls' High School hall, entry is free and refreshments will be provided.
