An attempt by three Kerikeri men to spice up the Far North District Council election seems to have worked - at least for Paris Hilton's worldwide legions of fans.
On Tuesday the Northern Advocate reported the men, who would identify themselves only as Mike, Arthur and Greg, had decided to add some glamour to an otherwise lack-lustre mayoral race.
They transformed a billboard next to the BP service station in Kerikeri Rd with a bed sheet bearing the text "Paris Hilton for Mayor" and a picture of the United States heiress.
The trio's foray into the mayoral campaign has now caught the attention of US-based fan site www.parishiltonsite.net, which describes itself as a "tribute to multitalented icon Paris Hilton".
The site's lead story yesterday was headlined, "Paris Hilton wanted for Mayor in Kerikeri, New Zealand".
Mike, Arthur and Greg may, however, want to skip the comments added by Paris Hilton fans.
J Elliott wrote: "Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with the thrust of the three geriatrics sponsoring Paris for mayor, I'm concerned they will have serious difficulty in keeping up with their candidate's youthful demands."
Other items on the fan site include, "Paris Hilton stars in a new family movie The Dog who saved Christmas Vacation II" and "Paris Hilton and her bad luck with cell phones".
