Proving it's not just the domain of bloke-ish rugged cowboy types, gun fanciers have the chance to get their hands on all manner of weapons at Sunday's Shootex 06 open day at Whangarei and Poroti. Organised by the Northland branch of the Sporting Shooters Association of New Zealand, Shootex is in its eighth year.
It's all about "having a go", said branch secretary Phil Cregeen. "Some of the young lads who came along to the first event are now committee members at local clubs."
The open day will be held at two venues. Pistols, .22 rifles and air guns are the focus at Whangarei's Maunu Quarry, while the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association Range at Brewer Rd in Poroti is hosting shotguns, black powder, sporting and military rifles.
"That's for the bigger boys and girls," said Mr Cregeen, who has been shooting for more than 50 years.
First-time shooter Brent Martin - a Whangarei accountant unwinding after a busy year - tried out his aim yesterday and is thinking about coming back at the weekend for more. "It's the joy of the bang, seeing the target drop, and feeling the adrenaline rush," he said.
The open day kicks off at 10am. Entry is free.
