From pre-72 American origin to classics, street rods, special projects and build-ups finished only yesterday - it's time again for the hottest show in Northland.

What better way for Northern Street Rods to throw a 21st birthday party the public can enjoy?

To celebrate this milestone, the club is hosting the Advanced Automatics 2012 Hot Rod Round-Up at Kensington Stadium over the weekend, to showcase the club's own cars, which range from builds-in-progress through to show cars. It will also be the drawcard for rodders and car-lovers from all over Northland, Auckland and further south.

In some cases members have been working right down to the wire to debut their cars, with hundreds of hours spent in workshops over the past few months, club secretary Sharon Paki said.

"Our membership generally sits around the 70 mark. When you take into account that you must own or part-own a car that meets our vehicle criteria, and there are several members who own more than one, rodding is definitely alive and thriving in the North."

The club has 67 entrants into its inside-stadium show, with many more hot rods and custom cars expected to be on display in the carpark. Ms Paki said many visitors will arrive in their own fabulous automobiles. There will be security in the carpark to ensure admirers don't get too up-close and personal with those vehicles.

The show is not all just about turning 21 and showing off the wheels, either.

"This will be our largest fundraiser since hosting the NZHRA National Show back in 2002. From this show we were extremely proud to be able to present the Child Cancer Foundation with a cheque for $18,000," Ms Paki said.

"This time we are delighted to be supporting Project Promise who are raising funds for a purpose built oncology ward here in Whangarei."
