Arrest after 'threatening to kill' incident in Kamo forced police to lock down street

Armed police blocked off Charles St, Kamo, on January 29 after reports of an armed man in the area. A man has now been arrested and charged in relation to the incident.

A man as been arrested and charged over an incident in Kamo last month where armed police closed down a residential street.

Northland police said today they have arrested a 32-year-old Kamo man who has been charged with threatening to kill and possession of methamphetamine.

The arrest is in relation to an incident in Kamo on January 29 where police rushed to Charles St, in Kamo, and locked the area down after reports of a man with a firearm.

"Police are very thankful for the public's assistance with the matter," Inspector Justin Rogers said of the arrest today.

The man has been remanded in custody to appear in the Whangarei District today.

The drama on January 29 began about 3.40pm after a man was believed to have left a property in Tikipunga with a pistol.

Officers were sent to nearby streets and places it was thought he may go. About 30 minutes later, officers put cordons in place in Charles St and stopped traffic from going in and out.

Neighbours in the area were out on the lawns or the decks of their homes watching the action unfold.

The Armed Offenders Squad arrived at the scene at 5.45pm with a police dog and handler there soon after, accessing the scene through Eden Terrace, a street overlooking Charles St.

However, the man could not be found at the time.
