Shane Hurndell Don't expect Taradale's Kathryn Marshall to give up the Hawke's Bay women's rugby side's No 12 jersey easily. Whether it's on attack or defence, Marshall has the goods to help keep the Hawke's Bay Tuis among the country's top five teams.
Eight days ago she displayed her attacking
skills with a seven-try haul for her club side and yesterday she marshalled Taradale's defence to perfection in a 32-3 win over Clive at Carter's Arms Park.
It was the first time Clive had been kept tryless in the six-year history of the competition. Marshall, right, also scored a try and is first equal on the competition's tryscoring table with MAC's Candis Cardie, as both players are on eight after two rounds.
"We could have reached 50 points but we took our foot off the throttle a bit and allowed Clive to force us to make errors," said Taradale coach Arthur Brown.
Props Gina Pomana and Nani Ngaronoa and loosies Marina Canterbury and Moana Davis were other valuable contributors.
Openside flanker Chanel Huddleston, No 8 Hana Wainohu and halfback Lisa Ropiha all displayed the benefits of their vast experience for Clive. Another experienced hand, centre Deidre Hakopa, made the most of her limited opportunities.
Newcomer Hastings Rugby and Sports recorded their first win of the season with a 17-15 victory over Western Suburbs at Ellwood Park yesterday. Prop Ria Ataera and No 9 Jamee Heather were among the hosts best players.
Suburbs displayed huge improvement on their previous week's loss to Taradale and their best players were No 8 Ngavero Heather, who scored two tries, and winger Stacey Tamati.
Former New Zealand softball pitcher Naomi Ioasa, playing at prop, scored two tries and captured player-of-the-match honours for MAC in their 46-10 win over Eskview at Flaxmere's Ron Giorgi Park on Saturday. Lock Louise Thompson and No 8 Sandra Oli were others to impress for the winners.
First five-eighth Tracy Hawkins and loose forward Heaven Spooner both had strong games for Eskview.
