A Jonah Lowe try gave Hawke's Bay a 17-13 win against Manawatu at the Hurricanes under-16 rugby tournament in Wellington yesterday.
Hawke's Bay trailed 13-10 at halftime in their tournament opener in fine but windy conditions. Centre Lowe, a younger brother of Magpies flanker Karl Lowe scored the try after
a slick backline move and first five-eighth Caleb Makene converted it.
In the second half Makene and tighthead prop Sean Morrison scored tries for the Bay. Busy Bay No 8 Hugh Renton did a lot of constructive tidying up work at the base of the scrum.
Morrison, Lowe and lock Edwin Laver were all members of last year's Hawke's Bay under-16 side.
Halfback Thomas Eden, who provided quality service to his backline and worked well off the ball, and winger Mathias Konia, who was dangerous on attack and lethal on defence, impressed in the winning backline.
