A list of rivers which may lend their names to new streets in a Napier suburban development was approved yesterday by the Napier City Council, with the addition of the area's three most prominent waterways which had been inadvertently left off by council staff.
The omission from the prospective names of streets across Te Awa was noted by Cr Maxine Boag.
The staff had offered a list of 48 rivers throughout the country, and Ms Boag was concerned that Ngaruroro, Tutaekuri and Tukituki were all missing.
They were also not among a list of names already allocated to streets in the Parklands area on the other side of town, or the same as or similar to names already in use for other reasons.
The council is also applying to the New Zealand Geographic Board for the name Te Awa to be formally recognised as the name of the area.
